TRINITY SOFTBALL PLAYOFF HOPES END
WITH DOUBLEHEADER LOSS AT BOWDOIN

Brunswick, Maine - Sophomore pitcher Erin Hanley (Foxboro, Mass.) picked up two victories on Saturday afternoon as the Bowdoin College Polar Bears swept a pair from the visiting Trinity College Bantams in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) East softball action this afternoon. The Polar Bears improve to 23-8-1 overall and 4-2 in the NESCAC East, while Trinity drops to 7-22 overall and 3-5 in the division. The Bantams are eliminated from contention for a NESCAC Championship Tournament bid.

Game one was a pitcher's duel as the two teams fought to scratch hits together. The Bantams took a lead in the top of the fifth when freshman 3B Marion-Anna Protano (Manalapan, N.J.) plated classmate Kate Hunter (Ross, Calif.) with a single to give Trinity a 1-0 edge.

The Polar Bears answered in the bottom of the sixth when a base hit by sophomore Britney Carr (Conway, N.H.) drove in a run to knot the game at one apiece. The game-winner came in the bottom of the seventh as senior SS Jessie Mayol (Westbrook, Maine) led off with a double and senior outfielder Katie Sheridan (Marblehead, Mass.) ripped a walk-off double to right-center, scoring Mayol and giving Bowdoin the win. Erin Hanley pitched the seventh in relief to take the win.

Game two featured two big innings by the Polar Bears to put the contest out of reach. Down 2-0 in the third, Bowdoin scored three in the bottom of the inning to take the lead. Five straight singles gave the Polar Bears a 3-2 lead. Six straight runners reached base in the fifth inning as Bowdoin batted around and scored five runs, putting the contest away. Hanley tossed seven innings, and allowed only two earned runs for the victory.
