TRINITY SOFTBALL LOSES TWO
DESPITE HUNTER NO-HITTER

Hartford, Conn.- Junior hurler Emily Melia (Hingham, Mass.) allowed eight hits and two runs over five innings to earn the win and lead the visiting Amherst College Lady Jeffs to a 3-2 win in the second game and a sweep of the doubleheader against the Trinity College Bantams in softball action this afternoon. Amherst edged Trinity, 4-3, in the second game, overcoming a nine-inning, no-hit performance by Bantam freshman Kate Hunter (Ross, Calif.) on the hill. The Bantams fall to 6-20 and Amherst improves to 16-8.

Hunter and Amherst pitcher Lauren Peloquin (Berkley, Mass.) each held the opposing offense scoreless through seven innings in the first game. In the top of the eighth inning, each team was able to push their designated runner across the plate to finish eight innings at 1-1. Amherst scored on a sacrifice and a wild pitch in the top of the inning, and Trinity returned the favor on a sacrifice bunt and a fielding error by Peloquin.

In the ninth frame, the winning run and two insurance runs all scored on wild pitches. All three were important, as Trinity scored two runs in its half of the inning on yet another wild pitch and consecutive singles by freshman 3B Marion-Anna Protano (Manalapan, N.J.), senior co-captain 2B Liz Bontempo (Granby, Mass.), and junior co-captain SS Laura Heath (Windsor, Conn.). With runners on first and third with two outs, Bantam senior outfielder Clare Bullock (Columbia, S.C.) hit into a fielder's choice to end the rally. Hunter finished with a career-high 15 strikeouts and her first career no-hitter, but Peloquin recorded the victory.

In the second game, Trinity junior right-hander Kristi McDermott (Barrington, R.I.) pitched a four-hitter in a losing effort, while Bontempo, Heath , and junior 1B Maureen Heneghan (Windsor Locks, Conn.) each had two hits for the Bantams.
