Head Coach Tammi Hyde Gets First Career Victory
Hartford, Conn.- Sophomore right-hander Kristi McDermott (Barrington, R.I.) tossed a two-hit shutout with five strikeouts to lead the Trinity College Bantams to a 2-0 win over the visiting United States Coast Guard Academy Bears in intercollegiate softball action this afternoon. Trinity wins its first game in 12 tries this season to improve to 1-11, while the Bears dip below .500 at 9-10. The victory was the first in the career of Trinity Head Coach Tammi Hyde in her first season.
Trinity scored the game's first run in the top of the fourth inning on an RBI single by junior Clare Bullock (Columbia, S.C.) that scored classmate Liz Bontempo (Granby, Mass.), who had singled and stoled her way to thiurd base. The Bantams added another run in the fifth inning on consecutive singles by sophomores Maureen Heneghan (Windsor Locks, Conn.) and Laura Heath (Windsor, Conn.) and an RBi double by Bontempo.
Coast Guard had runners on second and third base with one out in the top of the first inning on a pair of Trinity errors, but failed to push any runs across the plate off McDermott. Bear senior right-hander Katie Wunderlich (Palm City, Fla.) and freshman right-hander Kelly Ponts (Healdsburg, Calif.) combined to allow six hits in a losing effort on the mound.
