MCDERMOTT BLANKS EASTERN
CONNECTICUT
IN TRINITY SOFTBALL VICTORY
Willimantic, Conn.- Sophomore right-hander Kristi McDermott (Barrington, R.I.) tossed a five-hit shutout to lead the visiting Trinity College Bantams to a 1-0 win over the Eastern Connecticut State University Warriors in intercollegiate softball action this afternoon. Trinity, which avenges an earlier 15-2 loss to Eastern in Florida in which the Bantams committed 10 errors, improves to 2-13 and the Warriors snap a four-game losing streak to drop to 10-11.
Trinity senior co-captain Tricia Mase (North Branford, Conn.) drove in sophomore Laura Heath (Windsor, Conn.) with a single to center with two outs in the sixth inning. Heath had reached first on an infield hit and advanced to second on a passed ball.
The Warriors threatened in the bottom of the seventh, as two pinch-hitters reached base on a walk and an infield hit off McDermott. McDermott field a ground ball and threw out the lead runner at third base for the second out, and yielded a fly ball to centerfield to preserve the Bantam triumph.
McDermott struck out two and walked one to win her second 1-0 game in three starts, and the Bantam defense came through with an errorless performance. Eastern senior righty Karen Kaczynski (Harwinton, Conn.) went the distance, allowing four hits and striking out five, and allowed her first run in 24.1 innings when Heath scored.
