AMHERST NEEDS EXTRA INNINGS
BUT STILL SWEEPS TRINITY SOFTBALL
Amherst, Mass.- Senior Meg Nelson (Middletown, Conn.) hit an RBI single in the bottom of the 10th inning to lead the Amherst College Lady Jeffs to a 3-2 win in the first game and a sweep of the doubleheader against the visiting Trinity College Bantams in New England Small College Athletic Conference inter-division softball action this afternoon. Trinity falls to 2-15, while Amherst extended its current winning streak to eight games to improve to 14-4.
Trinity sophomore right-hander Kristi McDermott (Barrington, R.I.) came up short in the first game pitcher's duel, despite giving up three unearned runs and walking two over nine innings. McDermott held the Jeffs scoreless until the eighth inning, when Nelson tied the game at 1-1 on a sacrifice fly. Trinity had gone ahead, 1-0, in the top of the eighth on an RBI double by sophomore first baseman Maureen Heneghan (Windsor Locks, Conn.).
Trinity took the lead again in the top of the 10th frame on an RBI single by freshman Jennifer Kernan (Milton, Mass.) that scored sophomore Susan Kelly (Milford, Mass.). Amherst scored two runs in the bottom of the 10th on an RBI double by senior Carline Kelly (South Dartmouth, Mass.) and Nelson's single that plated home Kelly. Amherst junior Lauren Peloquin (Berkley, Mass.) went all 10 innings, allowing four hits, two unearned runs, striking out five, and walking one.
In the second game, Trinity came back from a 4-1 deficit in the sixth inning with three unearned runs. With two outs, Kelly doubled to left center to knock home senior co-captain Tricia Mase (North Branford, Conn.) and junior Elizabeth Bontempo (Granby, Mass.), and scored on a Jeff error on the next play.
The game went into the eight inning tied at 4-4, when senior Shari Sakamoto (Pasadena, Calif.) hit an RBI single to win it for Amherst. Sophomore Emily Melia (Hingham, Mass.) allowed seven hits and one earned run to earn the win on the mound, outdueling Trinity freshman Lauren McDowell (Martha's Vineyard, Mass.) who also went the distance.
