WESTERN CONNECTICUT BEATS TRINITY SOFTBALL
Danbury, Conn. - Senior catcher Kim Lynch (Southington, Conn.) went 3-for-3 with a double, a homer, and three RBI to lead the Western Connecticut State University Colonials to a 7-2 win over the visiting Trinity College Bantams in softball action this afternoon. Trinity falls to 3-20, while the Colonials, ranked No. 9 in the nation, improves to 20-1 with their 15th consecutive victory.
Western broke open a 2-2 game with four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a 6-1 lead. Lynch had an RBI-single and senior Shanna Fairchild (New Milford, Conn.) belted an RBI-double in the inning. Trinity had tied the score in the top of the inning after senior co-captain Brianna Stanton (West Des Moines, Iowa) doubled and scored on a wild pitch.
The Bantams went ahead, 1-0, in the top of the first on double by sophomore Susan Kelly (Milford, Mass.) and an RBI-single by classmate Laura Heath (Windsor, Conn.). The Colonials tied it in the bottom of the inning on a triple by senior Keri Lynch (New Fairfield, Conn.) and an RBI-single by Kim Lynch.
Freshman southpaw Kathryn Heiberg (New Milford, Conn.) tossed a five-hitter for Western, while Trinity sophomore Kristi McDermott (Barrington, R.I.) struck out three and walked one but yielded 14 hits in five-plus innings.
