MCDERMOTT LEADS TRINITY TO DOUBLEHEADER
SOFTBALL SWEEP AT BATES
Lewiston, Maine - Sophomore right-hander Kristi
McDermott (Barrington, R.I.) pitched a four-hit shutout with four strikeouts
to lead the visiting trinity College Bantams to a 4-0 win in the first game and
split in the doubleheader against the Bates College Bobcats in the New England
Small College Athletic Conference Athletic Conference softball regular season
finale for the Bantams. Trinity finishes the season with four wins in the final
six games to end at 7-22 and 1-11 in the NESCAC. Bates moves to 14-12 and 3-5 in
the league.
Only one Bates runner got as far as third base, in the third inning, when
McDermott worked out of a bases-loaded jam. The Bantams took advantage of two
Bates errors in the fourth inning to score the game's runs. Leadoff hitter Liz
Bontempo (Granby, Mass.) reached on an error and moved to third when Susan
Kelly (Millford, Mass.) Reached safely on a one-out bunt attempt. Senior
shortstop Tricia Mase (Northford, Conn.) drove in Bontempo just before
sophomore outfielder Laura Heath (Windsor, Conn.) cleared the bases with
a three-run home run.
Bates jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second game. The Bobcats scored one run in
the second inning when rookie Amanda Beck (Pleasantville, N.Y.) rapped a
single to right field that went through the legs of Trinity's rightfielder,
allowing Beck to circle the bases. The Bobcats tacked on three more runs in the
third when sophomore pitcher Krissie Whiting (Contoocook, N.H.) singled,
stole second and scored on successive passed balls. After the Bantams got two
outs, three straight Bates batters reached, capped by a two-run double from
first-year DP Sarah Levine (Leeds, Mass.). Trinity scored two unearned
runs in the fourth inning and another in the fifth to cut the lead to 4-3, but
could not bring home the equalizer.
