Sports update, softball vs. Western Connecticut (2), 4/20/00
WESTERN PITCHERS STOP TRINITY SOFTBALL
Hartford, CT - Senior righthander Kate Manning (Randolph, MA) and junior
righty Stacey Miehe (Suffern, NY) both pitched four-hit, complete games to
lead the visiting Western Connecticut State University Colonials to a sweep
of a doubleheader against the Trinity College Bantams in softball action
this afternoon. Western improves to 17-4 for the season, while Trinity
falls to 9-19.
Western scored single runs in the fifth and sixth innings of a 2-0
win in the first game. Junior centerfielder Kerri Lynch (New Fairfield, CT)
doubled home the first run and junior catcher Kim Lynch (Southington, CT)
homered in the sixth for the Colonials. Trinity freshman Kristi McDermott
(Barrington, RI) allowed just five hits in a losing effort.
In the second game, Western scored four runs in the top of the
second inning, but Trinity rallied for three in the bottom of the inning
thanks to RBI singles by senior leftfielder Nikki Law (Worcester, MA) and
sophomore catcher Clare Bullock (Columbia, SC). Lynch knocked in a run in
the fourth inning and junior utility player Shanna Fairchild (New Milford,
CT) hit a home run in the seventh inning to secure the 6-3 win for the
Colonials.
