Sports update, softball at St. Joseph, 4/25/00
MCDERMOTT SHUTS OUT ST. JOE'S FOR TRINITY SOFTBALL
Hartford, Conn.- Freshman righthander Kristi McDermott (Barrington, RI)
pitched a three-hit shutout to lead the visiting Trinity College Bantams to
a 2-0 win over the St. Joseph College Bluejays in softball action this
afternoon. The victory improves Trinity's record to 10-19 overall, while the
Bluejays fall to 21-6.
McDermott struck out two and walked none to even her season record
at 8-8, and senior catcher Caitlin Luz (Woburn, MA) broke a scoreless tie
with a solo homer to lead off the bottom of the seventh inning for Trinity.
Sophomore second baseman Elizabeth Bontempo (Granby, MA) followed Luz's home
run with a single and freshman first baseman Maureen Heneghan (Spencer, MA)
drove home Bontempo with two runs for Trinity's second run.
Junior rightfielder Jessica Brock (Newington, NH) reached on an
error with two outs in the bottom of the seventh for St. Joseph but
McDermott retired the third out to seal the win. Bluejay sophomore pitcher
Mary Anne Parsons (Clinton, CT) allowed seven hits and struck out three in a
losing effort.
