2000 Cross Country Outlook

Trinity College

Despite the loss of three seniors to graduation, the Trinity men's cross country team has reason to be optimistic, as nine experienced harriers will return from last season's eighth-place New England Championship finish. Senior co-captain Todd Markelz, who qualified for the NCAA Division III National Championships and earned All-NESCAC and All-New England honors in 1999, will enter his final season as one the strongest runners in the region.

Junior co-captain Steve Napier and senior Adam Strogoff will combine with an outstanding sophomore class, including Ryan Bak (a national qualifier in track), James Emord, Ryan Lerner, Steve Coakley, Steve LeMarbre, and Carl Baglio, to form a deep and talented group behind Markelz. With perhaps the strongest men’s team in Head Coach George Suitor’s nine-year tenure, further bolstered by the addition of three solid freshman prospects, the Bantams look to contend with the top squads in the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) and the region.

The women's team, which finished 17th at the New England Championships, has two top runners with junior captain Caroline Leary (team-best time in 1999) and sophomore Leeann Rheaume. Junior Katelyn McNeil and sophomores Kate Klein, Sarah Hackett, and Stephanie Wezowicz are talented and hard-working runners who will benefit from last year’s experience. The Bantams are poised for a much-improved finish in the New England region.

Wickham Park, located in nearby Manchester, CT, is Trinity's home course. It is among Connecticut’s most beautiful parks and has one of the most challenging courses in New England.
