TRINITY’S BAK WINS 1,500 METERS
AND PLACES SEVENTH IN 5,000 AT NCAA NATIONALS
Ada, Ohio- Junior tri-captain Ryan Bak (Suffield, Conn.) won the 1,500-meter run and finished seventh in the 5,000-meter run to lead the Trinity College Bantams to a 13th-place finish at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships at Ohio Northern University this weekend.
Bak finished the 1,500-meter trials on Friday with the best time of the field at 3:53.66, which was over five seconds better than the second-best runner. On Saturday, Bak won the race with a time of 3:52.31, edging Ryan Kleimenhagen, of Wisc.-Platteville, by .42 seconds with a strong kick at the end. The national title is the first for Trinity in men's track and field.
In the 5,000 meters, which took place less than two hours after the 1,500 meters was completed, Bak finished seventh with a time of 14:51.51. He was named an All-American in both events. By himself, Bak collected 12 points for Trinity, tying the Bantams with three other teams for 13th place in the Championships and finishing second of all the New England schools.
"Going into the race I was confident, I had been racing well and I knew I had a shot to win”, said Bak about his championship performance in the 1,500 meters. “I relied on my kick with a lap to go, I told myself I was going to win and I pulled out. I prepared mentally to fully convince myself that I can beat the competition."
