TRINITY MEN AND WOMEN LOSE
SWIMMING OPENERS AT BATES
Lewiston, Maine- Junior David Bear (Winter Park, Fla.) won three events to lead the Bates College Bobcats to a 206-58 win over the visiting Trinity College Bantams in the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) men’s swimming and diving season opener for both teams this afternoon. Bobcat freshmen Vanessa Williamson (Auburn, Maine) and Nicole Sparks (New Canaan, Conn.) each won two events and were part of two victorious relay teams to lead Bates to a 160.5-94.5 win over Trinity in the teams’ NESCAC women’s swimming season opener.
Trinity sophomores Julia Kaye (Upper Saddle River, N.J.) and freshman Katherine Mortensen (Bedford, Mass.) won the 1,000-yard freestyle and the 50-yard backstroke with times of 11:21.05 and 30.11 s, respectively. Kaye also finished second in the 100-yard freestyle at 59.05 s and Mortensen was also second in the 100-yard backstroke at 1:05.18. Trinity sophomore Elizabeth Stoker (Westwood, Mass.) finished in second place in both the 50-yard freestyle (27.08 s) and the 50-yard butterfly (30.11 s.)
In the men’s meet, senior captain Christian Sterling (Glastonbury, Conn.) and junior Chris Rorer (Villanova, Pa.) both finished second in two events. Sterling finished .09 seconds behind the first-place finisher in the 100-yard butterfly at 59.14 s, and :18.05 seconds behind the winner in the 1,000-yard freestyle at 10:50.19. Rorer posted second-place times of 30.03 s in the 50-yard breaststroke and 1:05.29 in the 100-yard breaststroke.
