2001-02 Women's

Swimming and Diving Outlook

Trinity College

After a solid 2000-01 season that generated two varsity records, the Trinity College men's and women's swimming and diving program, under the direction of Head Coach Kristen Noone, has its sights set even higher this year. With the loss due to graduation of one of the larger senior classes in recent history, the men’s team looks to this year’s senior captain Christian Sterling (Glastonbury, Conn.) to lead a young but seasoned squad. For the women, senior co-captains Lydia Barrett (Haverhill, Mass.), and Katie Lafleur (Belchertown, Mass.) highlight a solid list of returning veterans who will also strive to contend at the second annual NESCAC Championships.

The Women's Team

After a young team recorded a 2-7 dual-meet record and an 11th place finish at the NESCAC Championships, the Trinity College women's swimming and diving squad returns several key members among 15 letterwinners in 2001-02.

Barrett will play a versatile and major role, contributing points in the butterfly, distance freestyle, and IM events. Lafleur, a 2000-01 NESCAC All-Academic selection, will help round out the butterfly event.

Juniors Laura Centofanti (Haverhill, Mass.), a NESCAC All-Academic nominee last winter, and Kathryn O’Donoghue (Old Westbury, N.Y.) will provide continued depth in the middle distance and distance freestyle events.

A large sophomore class will continue to power Coach Noone’s young squad. Julia Kaye (Upper Saddle River, N.J.), who was named the team’s Most Valuable Swimmer as a freshman, returns to represent the team in the distance and IM events. Breaststroker Jennie Bartlett (Marblehead, Mass.), who secured a freshman record in the 50-yard event last season, will be a significant point scorer for the Bantams. Also providing depth for the team will be backstroker Kathryn Youngberg (Cheshire, Conn.) and sprint freestyler/backstroker Beth Stoker (Westwood, Mass.).

The squad lost one of its most successful swimmers, Cory Bernard, to graduation but will look to the incoming freshmen to step up to the blocks. Newcomers will include versatile sprint freestyle/butterfly/IM swimmer Beth Ramaley (Old Greenwich, Conn.), middle distance freestyler Brianne Barrett (Haverhill, Mass.) and backstroker Kate Mortensen (Lincroft, N.J.). These new athletes as well as the remaining veteran swimmers and divers will help Trinity become a strong contender at the NESCAC Championships.
