2001-02 Men'sSwimming and Diving Outlook |
After a solid 2000-01 season that generated two varsity records, the Trinity College men's and women's swimming and diving program, under the direction of Head Coach Kristen Noone, has its sights set even higher this year. With the loss due to graduation of one of the larger senior classes in recent history, the men’s team looks to this year’s senior captain Christian Sterling (Glastonbury, Conn.) to lead a young but seasoned squad. For the women, senior co-captains Lydia Barrett (Haverhill, Mass.), and Katie Lafleur (Belchertown, Mass.) highlight a solid list of returning veterans who will also strive to contend at the second annual NESCAC Championships.
The Men's Team
Having lost diver Brad Albus, an NCAA provisional qualifier, three-meter varsity record holder, and last season’s MVP, as well as other top point scorers to graduation, the Trinity College men's swimming and diving team will look to the incoming freshmen class and returning veterans to continue the developing strength of the team in 2001-02. The Bantams recorded a 3-6 dual-meet record and 10th place finish at the NESCAC Championships in 2000-01.
Sterling will continue to score key points for the Bantams in the distance freestyle and butterfly events. Juniors Chris Rorer (Villanova, Pa.), who made All-New England honorable mention in the 50-, 100-, and 200-yard breaststroke events last season, and Mike Tobin (Montclair, N.J.), a distance freestyler/breaststroker and the team’s Most Improved Swimmer in 2000-01, will provide leadership to this growing young team.
Coach Noone looks for a strong freshmen class to make some noise in 2001-02. Among the extremely talented field of newcomers are backstrokers Andy Breiner (Scarborough, Maine) and Matt DeRosa (Setauket, N.Y.), freestyle sprinters Mark Silva (Scarsdale, N.Y.) and Louis Evans (Canton, Ga.) middle distance freestyler Fielding one of the fastest incoming freshmen classes, the Trinity men hope to finish strong at the NESCAC Championships this winter.
