HELAL AND EL-HALABY WIN NATIONAL
SINGLES TITLES FOR TRINITY AND PRINCETON
Hartford, Conn. - Trinity College junior co-captain Amina Helal (Manchester, England) and Princeton’s Yasser El-Halaby (Cairo, Egypt) won the College Squash Association (CSA) Women's and Men's Squash Singles Championships, respectively, this weekend at Trinity College’s George A. Kellner Squash Center.
Helal overwhelmed Princeton’s Runa Reta (Calgary, Alberta) in the women’s final (Ramsey Cup), 9-4, 9-0, 1-9, 9-3 and El-Halaby defeated Princeton teammate Will Evans (Auckland, New Zealand) in the men’s final (Pool Trophy), 9-3, 9-0, 9-2. Bowdoin’s Merrill Muckerman captured the women’s “b” Hollaran Cup 3-0 (9-7, 9-3, 10-9) over Ashley Harmeling (North Reading, Mass.) from Amherst. In the men’s “b” Malloy Division finals, Harvard’s Gaurav Yadav (Bangladore, India) won the title in an extensive match over Hobart sophomore Tejvir Rathore (Indore, India), 6-9, 7-9, 9-3, 9-3, 9-5.
This is Helal’s second consecutive championship title after defeating teammate Lynn Leong (Kota Bharu, Malaysia) in last year’s Championships(WISA) at Princeton. Trinity freshman Larissa Stephenson (Auckland, New Zealand) and senior Carl Baglio (Toronto, Ontario) each reached the finals of the "A" division consolation tourneys, and Bantam sophomore Meridy Vollmer (Cincinnati, Ohio) advanced to the semifinals of the Hollaran Cup.
