MEYER LEADS COAST GUARD TO WIN
OVER TRINITY MEN'S SOCCER

New London, Conn.- Junior Garrett Meyer (Camano Island, Wash.) scored a pair of goals in the first nine minutes of the game to lead the United States Coast Guard Academy Bears to a 5-2 win over the visiting Trinity College Bantams in men's soccer action this afternoon. Trinity drops to 1-1-1 with its first loss of the season, while the Bears improve to 2-1.

Coast Guard led 3-0 just 12:54 into the match as Meyer scored 1:12 and 8:53 into the match before junior midfielder Judson Wheeler (Hancock, N.H.) gave the Bears the three goal lead. The first and third goals were both headers off throw ins by junior back Matt Smith (Napa, Calif.). In the 27th minute, junior forward Chris Cumberland (Forest, Va.) extended the Coast Guard lead to 4-0, a lead the Bears would take to halftime.

Trinity got back in the game as senior co-captain forward Morgan Sandell (Cohasset, Mass) and freshman midfielder Alan Shilling (South Brunswick, N.J.) cut the Bears lead to 4-2. Shilling, who assisted Sandell along with junior back Tim Cross (Marblehead, Mass.) on Trinity's first goal, almost pulled the Bantams within one goal when he appeared to smash a shot into the right corner of the net on an indirect kick from the left side of the field. The officials waved the goal off, stating that an indirect kick must touch two players before entering the goal, and Bear sophomore defender Anthony Marcheski (Egg Harbor, N.J.) put the game away for the Bears with a goal in the 75th minute.

Trinity outshot Coast Guard 21-12, but Bear junior goalie Phil MacArthur (Red Creek, N.Y.) made 14 saves in goal.
