KINNAIRD GOAL GIVES BOWDOIN MEN’S SOCCER SEASON OPENING WIN AT TRINITY
Hartford, Conn. - Sophomore back Patrick Kinnaird (San Diego, Calif.) scored the game-winning goal on a header with :27 remaining to lead the visiting Bowdoin College Polar Bears to a 3-2 win over the Trinity College Bantams in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) men'’ soccer action this afternoon.
The game was the season opener for both teams, with Trinity falling to 0-1 overall and in the NESCAC and Bowdoin improving to 1-0 overall and in the league.
Trailing 2-0 at the half, the Bantams came back on consecutive goals by sophomore midfielders Aaron Birnbaum (Newton, Mass.) and John Klaus (Blue Bell, Pa.). Birnbaum scored the first goal on a redirect of a pass by junior co-captain midfielder Peter Zoppi (Cheshire, Conn.) at 77:50. Zoppi fed Klaus on a header into the upper left corner of the goal to tie the score at 84:07.
Bowdoin freshman Tucker Hodgkins (Yarmouth, Maine) returned the favor, feeding Kinnaird on a cross, which Kinnaird headed into the upper left corner of the Trinity goal for the game-winning score.
Junior Bart McMann (Marshfield, Mass.) and senior David Bulow (Denver, Colo.) scored the two Polar Bear goals in the first half. Bulow also assisted on the first goal.
Bowdoin sophomore gpalkeeper Travis Derr (Berlin, Conn.) made eight saves, while Trinity sophomore goalie Michael Doherty (Marshfield, Mass.) stopped eight Polar Bear shots.
