ALONGI GIVES COAST GUARD MEN’S
SOCCER OVERTIME WIN AT TRINITY
Hartford, Conn. - Junior midfielder Tony Alongi (Little Rock, Ark.) scored the game-winning goal in the 118th minute to lead the visiting United States Coast Guard Academy Bears to a 3-2 win over the Trinity College Bantams in men's soccer action this afternoon. Trinity, which loses its second 3-2 game in a row, falls to 0-2, while the Coast Guard improves to 2-0-1 with its second consecutive triumph.
Trinity built a 2-0 halftime lead, consistently keeping the ball in Coast Guard’s for the first 45 minutes. Trinity junior co-captain forward Morgan Sandell (Cohasset, Mass.) sent a cross over the middle that deflected off Coast Guard senior co-captain Chris Davis (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and into the Bear goal 6:63 into the game. With :56 remaining in the first stanza, Sandell scored on assists by freshman midfielder Ramon Bell (Kingston, Jamaica) and senior co-captain Peter Zoppi (Cheshire, Conn.). The Bantams outshot the Bears, 20-6, in the first half.
In the second half, Coast Guard took advantage of their scoring opportunities, scoring twice with just three shots. Seniors Jared Truez (West Bayshore, N.Y.) and John Walsh (Point Pleasant, N.J.) each found the net off feeds from senior co-captain forward Scott Cieplik (Gales Ferry, Conn.). Walsh’s score tied the game with 7:07 left in regulation.
Alongi, who defended a header that would have won the game for the Bantams early in the first overtime period by Trinity sophomore midfielder Aaron Birnbaum (Newton, Mass.), knocked in the game-winner on a pass by sophomore back Peter Lubrano (Williamsburg, Va.) that had deflected off Trinity freshman goalie Jamie Burns (Minnetonka, Minn.).
Burns, making his collegiate debut, made eight saves, while Coast sophomore Phil MacArthur (Red Creek, N.Y.) had 11 saves for the Bears. Trinity finished with 28 shots and Coast Guard had 12.
