TRINITY MENS SOCCER SINKS SALVE REGINA
Hartford, Conn. - Sophomore forward Morgan Sandell (Cohasset, Mass.) scored the game-winning goal on a free kick with 19:35 remaining in the second half to lead the Trinity College Bantams to a 3-1 win over the visiting Salve Regina University Seahawks in mens soccer action this afternoon.
Trinity wins its second consecutive game and is now 2-1-2 and 1-1 in the NESCAC, while Salve Regina falls to 3-6.
Trinity got on the scoreboard 15:41 into the game when senior midfielder Steven Rovithus (Agawam, Mass.) placed a corner kick in front of the goal that deflected off the head of Trinity senior Peter Trimble (Mashpee, Mass.), and was headed in by sophomore forward Stuart Poole (Scarborough, Maine).
The Seahawks tied the score 8:39 later on a free kick by senior forward Bill Glenney (Gates Ferry, Conn.), but Sandell returned the favor on a Trinity free kick at the 70:25 mark. Bantam senior tri-captain Caley Iandiorio (Wayland, Mass.) added a late Trinity goal from freshman midfielder Aaron Birnbaum (Newton, Mass.).
Trinity freshman goakeeper Michael Doherty (Marshfield, Mass) made four saves in his collegiate debut, while sophomore Tom Slavin (Norwell, Mass.) made five saves for the Seahwaks.
