Amherst, Mass. - Junior goalkeeper Bill Orum (Greenwich, Conn.)made six saves and recorded the shutout to lead the Amherst College Lord Jeffs to a 3-0 win over the visiting Trinity College Bantams in New England Small College Athletic Conference action this afternoon.
Trinity, which finishes the season at 5-6-3 and 2-6-1 in the NESCAC, while Amherst ends its regular season at 7-5-2 and 4-5 in the league. Amherts earned a bid to the first-ever NESCAC Championship Tournament, and eliminates the Bantams from the tourney in today's game.
Amherst drew first blood on a freak play 23 minutes into the first half when freshman Bradford Coffey (Yarmouth, Maine) deflected a throw-in off Trinity freshman goalkeeper Michael Doherty (Marshfield, Mass.) into the Bantam net for the first goal of the game. It was also the first goal of Coffey's career.
The Jeffs then extended the lead to 2-0 when Franklin Perry (Hartford, Conn.) scored on an unassisted breakaway in the 60th minute. With under a minute remaining in regulation, senior Charles Franklin (Avon, Conn.) iced the game with a right-footed blast off a free kick to set the final score at 3-0.
Doherty finished with 10 saves for Trinity.
