AMHERST EDGES TRINITY IN MEN'S LACROSSE
Amherst, Mass.- Freshman attackman Alex Casertano (Millbrook, N.Y.) scored the game-winning goal with 3:15 remaining in the game to lead the Amherst College Lord Jeffs to an 11-10 win over the visiting Trinity College Bantams in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) men's lacrosse action this afternoon at Hitchcock Field. Trinity drops to 1-7 overall and 1-3 in the NESCAC with its fourth loss in a row, while the Jeffs snap a three-game losing skid to improve to 4-4 overall and 1-2 in the league.
With Amherst leading 3-1 early in the second quarter, Bantam freshman midfielder John Thach (Berwyn, Pa.) shot the ball through the legs of the Lord Jeff goalie to pull Trinity within one. Two Amherst goals later, Trinity caught fire with goals on three straight possessions to end the half, including the second of the game for Bantam sophomore attackman James Skiff (Portland, Maine), to make the count 5-5 at the break
After a goal by Amherst freshman defender Greg Donahue (Bow, N.H.) began the second half scoring, Trinity took its first lead of the contest at 7-6 on scores by sophomore attackman Sandy Leighton (Blue Bell, Pa.) and junior attackman Ravi Pillay (Church Falls, Va.). As the third frame came to a close, Skiff scored again to give Trinity a 9-7 lead with one quarter left to play. In the fourth stanza, Thach extended the Trinity lead to 10-7 with a nifty move and a scoring shot, but the Jeffs tallied four unanswered goals and held the ball for the final three minutes to emerge with an 11-10 triumph.
Skiff and John Thach led the Bantams offensively with three goals apiece, while Amherst junior midfielder Matt Margolis (Baltimore, Md.) paced the Jeffs with a trio of goals and an assist. Trinity sophomore goalie Geoff Shaw (Charlotte, N.C.) made his season debut in net with nine saves, while Amherst freshman Cushing Donelan (Noroton, Conn.) stopped 11 Bantam shots.
