NORWICH EDGES TRINITY IN MEN'S ICE HOCKEY TOURNAMENT
Northfield, Vt. - Senior forward Keith Aucoin (Chelmsford, Mass.) totaled a goal and two assists to lead the host Norwich University Cadets to a 5-4 win over the visiting Trinity College Bantams in the finals of the Times Argus Invitational Men's Ice Hockey Tournament this evening at Kreitzberg Arena.
The Bantams which snap a four-game winning streak, and are now 7-2-1 overall and 4-0 in the New England Small College Athletic Conference. The Cadets, who are the defending NCAA Division III national champions, improve to 5-4. The two squads will play again in Trinity's next game on Friday, Jan. 5 at 7:45 in West Hartford, Conn. St. Michael's College and Johnson and Wales University tied, 4-4, in the consolation game.
Norwich built leads of 4-1 and 5-2, but the Bantams rallied to cut the lead to 5-4 with 3:32 remaining in the game on back-to-back power play scores by freshman forward Dan Gyllstrom (Hudson, Mass.) and junior defenseman Brian Fenwick (Birmingham, Mich.).
Cadet goalie Ziga Ivanic (Ljubljana, Slovenia) stopped 20 shots and Trinity junior goalie Geoff Faulkner (Westerville, Ohio) made 34 saves. Junior forward Matt Greason (North Bridgton, Maine) notched a goal and two assists, while senior forward Denis Petrov (Novokuznetsk, Russia) and Gyllstrom added a goal and an assist for the Bantams. Gyllstrom and junior defenseman Mike Sayre (Walpole, N.H.) represented Trinity on the All-Tournament team.
