AMHERST BEATS TRINITY
IN BEN McCABE TOURNAMENT
Amherst, Mass. - Freshman Mike Kreger (Glenview, Ill.)scored two goals to lead the Amherst College Lord Jeffs to a 6-2 win over the visiting Trinity College Bantams in first-round action of the Ben McCabe Men's Ice Hockey Tournament at Orr Rink this evening.
Trinity falls to 3-1 with its first loss of the season, while the Jeffs improve to 2-1 with their second consecutive victory. Amherst will host the Connecticut College Camels in the championship game tomorrow at 4 p.m. after a 1 p.m. consolation game between the Wesleyan University Cardinals and Trinity. The Camels defeated Wesleyan, 7-2, in the other semifinal.
After taking a 1-0 lead on a Mathew Greason (Bridgton, Maine) breakaway score off an Amherst turnover midway through the first period, Trinity surrendered six straight goals. Junior forward Darren Reaume (West Seneca, N.Y.) knotted the score at 1-1, followed by a power play goal by senior forward Rob Hill (Averill Park, N.Y.), as Amherst took a 2-1 lead into the first intermission.
Trinity freshman forward Daniel Gyllstrom (Hudson, Mass.) connected on a power play score past Amherst goalie Nick Rieser (Northfield, Ill.) five seconds before the end of regulation. Junior goalie Geoff Faulkner (Westerville, Ohio) made 42 saves against 27 for Nick Reiser.
