RHOTEN ROCKS HAMPSHIRE IN MEN’S BASKETBALL TOURNEY WIN FOR TRINITY

Saratoga Springs, N.Y.- Freshman forward Tyler Rhoten (Ridgewood, N.J.) scored a career-high 34 points, sinking 14 out of 21 shots from the field and all six of his free throws, with eight rebounds and four steals to lead the Trinity College Bantams to a 91-73 win over the Hampshire College Black Sheep in the consolation round of the Skidmore College Men’s Basketball Invitational Tournament this afternoon.  Trinity evens its season mark at 3-3, while the Black Sheep drop to 3-8.

Trinity controlled the game from the beginning but could not shake the Black Sheep, who kept themselves within 10 and 15 points for the majority of the game.  Hampshire closed to 36-30 with 1:40 left in the first half, but Trinity never allowed the game to get any closer than six points the rest of the way.

Rhoten anchored a solid shooting performance for the Bantams, who shot 58.9 percent from the field (33-56) in the game and 69.2 percent in the second half (18-26).  Bantam sophomore forward Darren Baker (Lakehurst, N.J.) scored 11 points off the bench, while junior guard Shaun Smyth (Manchester, Conn.) notched 10 points and five assists in his first career start, and freshman forward Kevin Reed (Downsville, N.Y.) tallied 10 points and seven boards off the pine.

Three players scored in double figures for the Black Sheep, led by center William Wallace (Bristol, Conn.) with 19 points and five rebounds.  Guard Sequan Denson (New York, N.Y.) recorded 15 points and five rebounds, and guard Vernon Carter (Pittsburgh, Pa.) added 13 points for Hampshire.
