TRINITY MEN’S BASKETBALL OUTLASTS ELMS

 

Hartford, Conn.- Sophomore guard John Halas (White Plains, N.Y.) made six out of nine shots from the field, four out of six three-pointers, and eight out of nine free throws for 24 points to go with his five rebounds, eight assists, and four steals, leading the Trinity College Bantams to a 91-83 win over the Elms College Blazers in men’s basketball action this afternoon at Ray Oosting Gymnasium.  Trinity improves to 8-4 with its second win in two days and its fifth win in the last six games, while the Blazers drop to 4-6.

Trinity held the Blazers to nine field goals in 25 attempts in the first half en route to a 41-26 leads at intermission.  Halas had 11 points at the half for the Bantams, while Elms junior forward Deshawn Hawkins (West Hartford, Conn.) kept the visitors from being blown out with 12 first half points.

The Bantams extended their lead to as many as 23 points in the second half, before Elms pulled within eight points with five minutes remaining in the game behind 21 second half points by senior reserve forward Richard Doppman (Conway, Mass.).  The Bantams held on for the win, sinking 21 out of 27 shots from the line in the second half.

Trinity freshman forward Tyler Rhoten (Ridgewood, N.J.) scored 17 points and grabbed a team-high nine rebounds, while sophomore guard Jesse Farrell (Minneapolis, Minn.) notched 12 points and five assists, and sophomore forward Darren Baker (Lakehurst, N.J.) finished with 10 points anf five boards off the bench.

Hawkins leed all scorers with 28 points, and added seven rebounds and four assists, while Doppman finished 24 points, making five out of seven shots from three-point range and all seven of his free throw attempts for Elms.
