TRINITY MEN’S BASKETBALL USES BIG
SECOND HALF TO BEAT COAST GUARD
Hartford, Conn.- Sophomore guard John Halas (White Plains, N.Y.) scored a game-high 21 points, making eight out of 11 shots from the field and three three-pointers, and added seven rebounds, and five assists to lead the Trinity College Bantams to a 94-64 win over the visiting United States Coast Guard Academy Bears in men’s basketball action this evening at Ray Oosting Gymnasium. Trinity improves to 4-3 with its second win in a row, while the Bears have a two-game winning streak snapped and drop to 2-4.
With a 51-45 lead and 14:12 remaining in the game, Trinity outscored the Bears, 43-19, the rest of the way for the 30-point win. The Bantams shot 57.4 percent from the field (39-68), while holding Coast Guard to just 33.3 field goal shooting (25-75). Halas scored 15 of his points in the first half to match the 15 dropped by Bear senior forward Jim Hiltz (Fort Mitchell, Ky.), and Trinity held a 40-30 lead at intermission.
Five players scored in double figures for Trinity, helping sophomore guard Jesse Farrell (Minneapolis, Minn.) dish out a career-high 15 assists. Freshman forward Tyler Rhoten (Ridgewood, N.J.) had 20 points and a team-high 11 rebounds, while sophomore forward Darren Baker (Lakehurst, N.J.) contributed 16 points off the bench. Junior guard Shaun Smyth (Manchester, Conn.) nailed three three-pointers en route to a 13-point night, and senior tri-captain forward Corey Days (Baltimore, Md.) added 10 points, making all five of his shots from the field, eight rebounds, four assists, and three blocked shots for the Bantams.
Hiltz finished with 20 points and six boards for the Bears, including four three-pointers in seven attempts, while senior co-captain center Clay McKinney (York, Pa.) added 12 points and five rebounds.
