BATES DOWNS TRINITY MEN’S BASKETBALL
ON LAST SECOND SHOT

Hartford, Conn. - Brian Gerrity’s (Manchester, Maine) desperation trey from almost 30 feet out bounced on the rim and went in to give Bates College a 67-64 win over Trinity College in a men’s basketball New England Small College Athletic Conference game Friday night. Trinity drops to 11-6 overall and 3-2 in the NESCAC, while the Bobcats, ranked No. 5 in the Northeast region, improve to 16-2 overall and 4-0 in the league.

Co-captain C.J. Neely (North Easton, Mass.) led Bates with 17 points and seven boards while co-captain Angelo Salvaggio (Portland, Maine) and Jon Furbush (South Portland, Maine) chipped in with 15 points apiece. Furbush also added seven rebounds.

Trinity dominated the first half, leading by as much as 15 points (35-20, 5:01 remaining) as they led from tip to half. But a 12-0 run by Bates in that 5:01 cut the deficit to only three at the break. In that run, the Bantams missed three shots and committed seven turnovers.

The Bobcats finally tied the game at 44 with 16:35 left to go on a Neely jumper from the right corner. Bates assumed the lead, 47-44, when Salvaggio nailed a trey nearly three minutes later.

Bates would hold a lead from there, until John Halas (White Plains, N.Y.) nailed a trifecta from the top of the key to tie the game at 64 with seven seconds on the clock. Then, Gerrity dribbled the ball up the floor, crossed half court and contorted to elude the Bantam defender to heave the shot that went in on the buzzer.

Ryan Uszenski (Woodbridge, N.J.) led Trinity (11-6, 3-2) with 17 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Tyler Rhoten (Ridgewood, N.J.) added 16 points and seven boards while Halas tacked on 13 points.
