TRINITY MEN’S BASKETBALL FALLS
AT BROCKPORT IN NCAA SECOND ROUND
Brockport, N.Y.- Junior forward Mike Medbury (Attica, N.Y.) scored a team-high 18 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead the State University of New York at Brockport Golden Eagles to an 80-61 win over the visiting Trinity College Bantams in the second round of the NCAA Division III Men’s Basketball Championship Tournament at Tuttle Gymnasium this evening.
Trinity, which advanced to the game with a 75-47 triumph over Colby-Sawyer on Thursday, finishes its season with a 19-6 record. Brockport State, which will play Amherst in the next round at a site to be determined, improves to 27-2 for the season. The Golden Eagles were ranked No. 8 in the nation entering the game.
The Golden Eagles came out strong defensively, holding Trinity scoreless for the first 2:56 of the game before Bantam junior forward Ryan Uszenski (Woodbridge, N.J.) scored two layups in a row to make the score, 7-4. Brockport increased its lead to 21-11 on a three-point basket by sophomore forward Charlie Croff (Lockport, N.Y.), but Trinity battled back to within six points at 30-24 as the half drew to a close on a three-pointer by senior tri-captain swingman Colin Tabb (Somers, Conn.). Brockport freshman guard Bryan Boswell (Amherst, N.Y.) went the length of the floor for a lay-up to make the score, 32-24, at the half.
Uszenski had eight points at the half for Trinity, which was outrebounded, 23-14, while Tabb added seven. Croff paced the Golden Eagles with 10 first-half points. Trinity committed 14 turnovers in the first 20 minutes, but forced 13 from Brockport.
In the second half, Uszenski continued to keep the Bantams close, scoring consecutive baskets early to bring the Bantams within five at 37-32. Trinity cut the lead to 41-38 at the 11:50 mark on a drive by junior forward Corey Days (Baltimore, Md.). With 9:10 remaining, Golden Eagle sophomore center Brandon Mills (Rochester, N.Y.) made a steal and was fouled hard by Uszenski. A technical foul was also assessed to Trinity, resulting in a 51-41 lead for Brockport after all the foul shots were taken. The Golden Eagles held on the rest of the way, sinking 19 out of 24 free throws in the second half.
Tabb paced Trinity with 20 points, while Uszenksi totaled 14 points and four steals, and senior tri-captain forward Bryan Dion (East Haven, Conn.) tallied 12 points and 10 boards. Three other Brockport players joined Medbury in double figures in scoring, including junior forward Bob Skoczylas (Alden, N.Y.) with 13 points and senior guard Mike Masters (Rochester, N.Y.) with 12 points.
“Brockport came out with intensity and put us into a hole that proved to be too tough to get out of. They’re a good team. The kind of team that can do something in this tournament”, said Trinity Head Coach Stan Ogrodnik after the game.
