DEFENSE SHUTS DOWN HAMILTON
IN FOOTBALL SHUTOUT
Clinton, N.Y.- Senior quarterback Greg Ward (Avon, Conn.) was 17-for-22 for 196 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Trinity College Bantams to a 39-0 win over the Hamilton College Continentals in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) football action this afternoon. Trinity improves to 2-1, while the Continentals drop to 0-3 for the season.
Trinity dominated from the opening kickoff, gaining 484 yards of total offense while holding Hamilton to 52 yards of total offense, along with zero first downs and zero pass completions. Both are Bantam records, tying legendary marks set in 1934 against Hartwick and 1952 against Dickinson. Senior linebacker Curtis Tubbs (Rochester, Mass.) paced the defense statistically with six tackles and a sack.
Trinity took the opening kick off and marched 48 yards down the field in seven plays, capped off by an eight-yard run by senior captain running back Brian Fabrizio (Norwell, Mass.). Classmate Skip Sullivan (Milton, Mass.) missed the extra-point try, however, making the score, 6-0, in the Bantams’ favor. After a three and out possession by the Continentals, Trinity went 64 yards in eight plays including a six-yard touchdown pass from Ward to junior wide receiver Joe Wahl (Riverside, R.I.). Trinity’s third touchdown came with 13 minutes remaining in the second quarter, as Ward connected with junior tight end Jake Sexton (Hyannis, Mass.) for a 13-yard scoring pass making it 20-0 Trinity.
With 12:03 to go in the second Wahl caught his second touchdown of the afternoon on a 25-yard pass from Ward off a Hamilton fumble, making the score 27-0. Trinity capped off the first half scoring with an 18-yard run by junior running back Thomas Pierandri (Ridgefield, Conn.). Sullivan added the extra point making it 33-0 Trinity at the half.
The lone scoring in the second half came with 5:36 remaining in the third quarter. Trinity freshman tailback Brad Davis (Marlborough, Mass.) capped off a 14-play, 66-yard drive with a one-yard run. Sullivan’s extra point made it 39-0.
Brandon Holtslag (Whitesboro, N.Y.) started the game for Hamilton at quarterback. He ran four times fore seven yards and did not complete a pass. Peter Simon (Miami, Fla.) led Hamilton with 13 tackles and forced a fumble, while Sam Bowlby (Hamden, Conn.) had 12 tackles.
Ward and two other quarterbacks completed passes to 10 different receivers, led by Wahl and sophomore wide out Brad Soules (Simsbury, Conn.) who had four catches. Wahl finished with 63 receiving yards and had two touchdowns. Pierandri rushed 11 times for a team-high 84 yards, while Davis added 75 yards rushing on 16 carries and a touchdown.
