TRINITY FOOTBALL DEFEATS HAMILTON

Hartford, Conn. Junior running back Brian Fabrizio (Norwell, Mass.) rushed for a career-high 159 yards on 27 carries to lead the Trinity College Bantams to a 21-10 win over the visiting Hamilton College Continentals in the New England Small College Athletic College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) football action at Jessee/Miller Field this afternoon. Trinity improves to 2-1 and Hamilton drops to 0-3.

Hamilton scored its first points of the season in the game’s opening drive on a 26-yard field goal by freshman Peter Simon (Miami, Fla.), but Trinity came right back with a touchdown on its first drive. Fabrizio rushed four times for 35 yards on a 53-yard drive that finished with a 15-yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Greg Ward (Avon, Conn.) to freshman receiver Bradley Soules (Simsbury, Conn).

The game remained at 7-3 in Trinity’s favor, until the Continentals took advantage of a 15-yard Trinity penalty for illegal helmet contact and gained 65 yard on four rushes en route to the end zone. Hamilton senior tailback Chris Weeden (Illion, N.Y.) scampered 35 yards for the first Continental touchdown of the season with 4:29 to go in the first half.

The Trinity defense controlled the third quarter, holding Hamilton to eight total yards in three drives. Trinity took the lead on a 22-yard run by Fabrizio with 6:59 left in the quarter, and Trinity senior captain free safety Steven Cella (Peabody, Mass.) put the game away with a 47-yard interception return for a touchdown in the fourth stanza. The pick was the 16th in Cella’s career, leaving him one shy of the Bantam career record of 17.

The Bantam defense, which held Hamilton to 61 total yards in the second half, was led by junior captain inside linebacker David Midura (Easton, Mass.) with nine tackles. Sophomore inside linebacker Greg Tanner (Wellesley, Mass.) and sophomore defensive end Brendan Bowes (Wollaston, Mass.) each made eight tackles, while classmate Andrew Whipple (Marblehead, Mass.) totaled four tackles and four pass breakups.

Offensively, the Bantams finished with 214 rushing yards, as sophomore runner Tom Pierandri (Ridgefield, Conn.) complemented Fabrizio with nine rushes for 40 yards. Ward completed 15 out of 28 passes for 155 yards, including four to Soules for 71 yards and four to sophomore wide out Joe Wahl (Riverside, R.I.) for 50 yards.
