TRINITY FOOTBALL SHUTS OUT HAMILTON

Clinton, N.Y.- Sophomore kicker Skip Sullivan (Milton, Mass.) kicked three field goals and the Trinity College defense held Hamilton College to 112 yards in total offense as the visiting Trinity Bantams defeated the Hamilton Continentals in New England Small College Athletic Conference football action this afternoon.

The Bantams improve to 2-1, while Hamilton remains winless at 0-3. The Continentals have not beaten Trinity since 1994.

The Bantams got on the board with 9:44 left in the first quarter on a season-long 37-yard field goal by Sullivan. Bantam senior outside linebacker Matt Dorn (Braintree, Mass.) recovered a Hamilton fumble at the Continental 20 yard line to set up the score.

Sullivan added his second kick through the uprights in the opening seconds of the second quarter from 25 yards out, giving Trinity a 6-0 lead. The Bantams had advanced into Hamilton territory with a fake punt, as junior fullback David Mogan (Foxboro, Mass.) gained 28 yards on a direct snap.

The Trinity defense, which finally surrendered a first down with less than six minutes left in the second quarter, allowed 19 rushing yards and one pass completion for zero yards in the first half. The Continentals got no closer than the Trinity 44 yard line for the first 30 minutes in a dominant display by the Bantams.

On the second play of the third quarter, Hamilton sophomore quarterback Chris Rossi (York, Pa.), making his collegiate debut at the position, was intercepted by Trinity sophomore strong safety Gavin O’Reilly (Cheshire, Conn.) at midfield. The Bantams threatened to score, but Hamilton stopped Trinity sophomore tailback Brian Fabrizio (Norwell, Mass.) on fourth and inches on the 39 yard line.

After a scoreless third quarter, Sullivan connected on a career-high third field goal, set up by a 17-yard pass from Trinity sophomore quarterback Greg Ward (Avon, Conn.) to senior tight end Peter Nesbit (Wellesley, Mass.), a 20-yard scamper by Ward, and a costly Hamilton penalty.

The closest the Continentals could manage to scoring was a 53-yard field goal attempt with 10:05 remaining in the fourth quarter. The Continentals advanced to the Trinity 37 yard line, but were pushed back well out of field goal on penalties and solid Bantam defense.

Ward gave Trinity some insurance with 7:53 left in the game on a 43-yard touchdown pass to sophomore wide out Kevin Waters (Garden City, N.Y.). Waters caught a 20-yard pass, made a nice move on the defender after the catch, and outran the Hamilton secondary to the end zone. Sullivan nailed the extra point and Trinity came home with a 16-0 triumph.

Fabrizio grinded it out for 102 yards on 31 carries, as Trinity totaled 159 yards on the ground. Junior tailback Chris McCarthy (Somerville, Mass.) paced Hamilton with 43 rushing yards on 20 carries.

Trinity freshman defensive end Jamie Creed (Valley Forge, Pa.) followed up his NESCAC Rookie of the Week effort of a week ago with a team-high nine tackles and a sack this week. Sophomore linebacker David Midura (Easton, Mass.) and freshman defensive back Tim Mullaney (Wellesley, Mass.) added six tackles each for the Bantams.
