Williamstown, Mass - Senior tailback Fred Storz (Rockaway, N.J.) carried the ball 26 times for 107 yards to lead the Williams College Ephs to a win over the visiting Trinity College Bantams in New England Small College Athletic Conference football action this afternoon at Weston Field.
The Bantams, ranked No. 10 in New England entering the game, even their season record at 1-1, while the Ephs improve to 1-1.
Williams controlled the ball for the entire game, starting with their first possession of the first half. The Ephs drove 57 yards in 13 plays, taking up 6:14, culminating in a two-yard touchdown run by senior running back David Kinsley (Katonah, N.Y.). Williams missed the extra-point but took a 6-0 lead with 6:49 left in the first quarter.
The Bantams got an early opportunity later in the quarter, when senior Charles Botts (Boston, Mass.) recovered a fumbled punt by Williams senior return man Matt Student (New Milford, N.J.) at the Williams 33 yard line. The Bantams failed to get a first down, however, and came up empty after a 45-yard field goal attempt by sophomore kicker Skip Sullivan (Milton, Mass.) fell short.
Williams capitalized on a Trinity turnover late in the second quarter, as sophomore defensive back Johnny Kelly (Bronxville, N.Y.) picked off a pass from Trinity sophomore quarterback Greg Ward (Avon, Conn.). The pass deflected off the hands of intended receiver Mike Indelicato (Norwood, N.J.) and into the hands of Kelly, who returned the ball deep into Trinity territory. The Ephs took the ball into end zone on a 16-yard run by senior fullback Ken Ojukwu (Albany, N.Y.), and took a 13-0 lead into the locker room at the half.
Williams outgained Trinity, 173-25 in the first half, including 96 rushing yards by Storz on 22 carries. Williams had the ball for 20:18 of the first half, compared to 9:42 for Trinity.
The second half brought more of the same, as Williams continued to keep the ball away from the Trinity offense and take advantage of Bantam turnovers. After Ojukwu scored on a four yard run with 7:51 left in the third quarter, Williams recovered a fumble by Trinity senior tight end Peter Nesbit (Wellesley, Mass.) at the Trinity 35-yard line. Williams senior kicker Robert Kaufmann (San Diego, Calif.) connected on a 43-yard field goal and the Ephs led, 23-0 at the end of three quarters.
Trinity sophomore tailback Brian Fabrizio (Norwell, Mass.) finished with 71 yards on 17 carries, while Indelicato caught five passes for 47 yards. Ward completed 12 out 32 passes for 90 yards and was sacked four times.
The Trinity defense, which was on the field for the majority of the game, surrendered 240 rushing yards but allowed only 68 yards through the air. Junior free safety Steven Cella (Peabody, Mass.) paced the Bantams with 12 tackles, while senior linebacker Matt Dorn (Braintree, Mass.) made 11 tackles, including three for losses, and sophomore strong safety Gavin O'Reilly (Cheshire, Conn.) added 10 tackles. Freshman defensive end Jamie Creed (Valley Forge, Pa.) emerged as a pass rushing threat with two sacks and six tackles.
