FRESHMAN RUNNERS POWER TRINITY
FOOTBALL OVER BOWDOIN
Hartford, Conn. - Freshman running backs Tom Pierandri (Ridgefield, Conn.) and Matt Glasz (North Haven, Conn.) combined to rush for 191 yards and a touchdown to lead the visiting Trinity College Bantams to a 21-11 win over the Bowdoin College Polar Bears in New England Small College Athletic Conference football action this afternoon. The Bantams improve to 4-1 with their third straight win, while Bowdoin remains winless at 0-5.
The Trinity College football team turned two third quarter turnovers into 14 points and the Bantam defense held off a late Bowdoin surge. Trinity held a seven-yard margin in total yards on the afternoon (341-334) but took advantage of the Bowdoin (0-5) miscues for the victory.
After Bowdoin had taken a first quarter 2-0 lead on a safety, Trinity got on the board when Pierandri capped off a 13-play drive with a seven-yard run and a 7-3 Trinity lead. The Polar Bears cut the lead to 7-5 as senior Alex Tatum (Acton, Mass.) hit a 40-yard field goal as the half expired.
Midway through the third period, Bowdoin fumbled the ball on its own 17 yard line, and freshman defensive tackle Brendan Bowes (Wollaston, Mass.). Trinity cashed in three plays later as sophomore quarterback Greg Ward (Avon, Conn.) connected with junior fullback David Mogan (Foxboro, Mass.) for an 11-yard touchdown and a 14-5 lead.
Two series later, the Polar Bears again fumbled and Trinity recovered at the Bowdoin 46 yard line. Sophomore linebacker Andrew Wertz (Newtown, Pa.) knocked the ball loose from Chris Sakelakos (Peabody, Mass.) and pounced on the ball. Ward hit Kevin Waters (Garden City, N.J.) from 20 yards out five plays later to push the bulge to 21-5.
With 7:29 left in the game, Bowdoin trimmed the lead to 21-11 when sophomore quarterback Justin Hardison (West Hartford, Conn.) hit classmate Jason Rawlins (Bridgewater, Mass.) for a six-yard touchdown. The Trinity defense held Bowdoin out of the end zone for the rest of the game for the win.
The Bantams amassed 209 yards rushing, including 115 on 25 carries by Pierandri and 76 on 17 carries by Glasz. Pierandri ran for a career-high in rushing yards for the second consecutive week in relief of injured sophomore Brian Fabrizio (Norwell, Mass.). Glasz, who was injured for the first two games and a valuable reserve defensive back for the next two, was making his season and collegiate debut as an offensive player.
Ward passed for 132 yards and two touchdowns, while Waters caught three passes for 63 yards. Hardison connected on 23-of-38 pass attempts for 189 yards and a touchdown. Freshman Kevin Bougie (Sanford, Maine) paced Bowdoin with 48 rushing yards on 10 carries.
Defensively, sophomore David Midura (Easton, Mass.) made a game-high 10 tackles, while junior free safety Steven Cella (Peabody, Mass.) had seven stops. Wertz and sophomore strong safety Gavin O'Reilly (Cheshire, Conn.) each totaled six tackles and a fumble recovery.
