HOPPOCK AND JACOBS LEAD TRINITY
FIELD HOCKEY TO WIN OVER SMITH
Hartford, Conn.- Senior co-captain midfielder Mary Jacobs (Malvern, Pa.) and junior defender Susan Hoppock (Chevy Chase, Md.) each scored two goals to lead the Trinity College Bantams to a 6-2 win over the visiting Smith College Pioneers in field hockey action this afternoon.
Trinity, playing its season opener and its first game under new Head Coach Anne Parmenter, improves to 1-0, while the Pioneers fall to 0-1.
Trinity fell behind early on a goal by Smith freshman forward Chelsea Brown (Brattleboro, Vt.), and continued to trail throughout the majority of the first half despite several scoring opportunities.
Trinity freshman forward Beatrice Gratry (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) recorded her first collegiate goal with 7:07 left in the half to pull the Bantams even, and Hoppock scored twice in the next two minutes to put the Bantams up 3-1 at intermission.
In the second half, Jacobs notched her two goals, and fellow senior co-captain Heather Standring (Spencer, Mass.) added one score. Smith freshman goalie Sydney Siegel (Glencoe, Ill.) made 19 saves, while Bantam senior backstop Jessica Martin (Fort Myers, FL) needed to make just two saves.
