2001 Field Hockey Outlook

Trinity College

After finishing its regular season with a 1-13 record, the Trinity College field hockey team looks to bounce back under first-year Head Coach Anne Parmenter. The Bantams lost just two seniors and have a host of players with varsity experience ready to tackle one of the toughest schedules in the nation.

The Bantam goalkeeping is the team's greatest strength. Injured for over half the 2000 campaign, senior Jessica Martin (Fort Myers, Fla.) made 103 saves with one shutout last season for a 1.54 goals-against average. Sophomore Gwen Gillespie (Gates Mills, Ohio) filled for Martin admirably, starting 11 games with 73 saves.

Three starters from a year ago return at forward, as senior Heather Standring (Spencer, Mass.), junior Lindsay Peet (Stowe, Vt.), and sophomore Jennifer Latiff (Rosemont, Pa.) finished 2-3-4 in scoring last fall. Junior Emily Fleisher (Potomac, Md.) and sophomore Amanda Jones (Duxbury, Mass.) will be among the leading candidates for playing time up front.

In the midfield, senior Mary Jacobs (Malvern, Pa.) is one of the conference’s top players, while seniors Kaitlin Wilson (Concord, Mass.) and Corinne Gagnon (Haverhill, Mass.) started 12 games between them last season, giving Trinity three veteran midfielders from its 1998 Final Four season. Sophomore Kristen Grabowski (Burlington, Conn.) will help at both midfielder and forward.

Juniors Susan Hoppock (Chevy Chase, Md.) and Jennifer Rieg (Bryn Mawr, Pa.), each of whom started all 14 games last season, lead the defense which also features sophomore Meriden Daly (Shrewsbury, Mass.) among its top veterans. Hoppock made six defensive saves in 2000. Jacobs and Gagnon could also swing to the backfield if needed.
