WESLEYAN FIELD HOCKEY SLIPS PAST
TRINITY ON PENALTY STROKES
Hartford, Conn.- Senior tri-captain goalkeeper Taryn Hutchins-Cabibi (Concord, N.H.) stopped four penalty strokes after two overtimes failed to produce a winner, as the visiting Wesleyan University Cardinals defeated the Trinity College Bantams in New England Small College Athletic Conference field hockey action this afternoon.
Trinity falls to 1-12 and 0-8 in the NESCAC with its eleven th consecutive loss, while the Cardinals improve to 10-3 and 6-2 in the league with its seventh straight victory.
The majority of the game was played yesterday, before the referees suspended play due to darkness with 10:46 remaining in the second overtime. This afternoon at 4:30 p.m., the teams played the final minutes of the second extra frame with no score and then went on to a penalty stroke series.
Sophomores Marley Aloe (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Laura Pfeiffenberger (Hollis, Maine) each beat Trinity junior goalie Jessica Martin (Fort Myers, Fla.) in Wesleyans first two penalty stroke attempts. Hutchins-Cabini stymied three four Trinity tries, including that of junior Kaitlin Wilson (Concord, Mass.) which clinched the triumph for the Cardinals.
In regulation, the Bantams had taken a 2-0 lead on two first half goals by freshman Jennifer Latiff (Stowe, Vt.). The goals were the first and second of Latiffs collegiate career. Senior tri-captain Mary Jacobs (Malvern, Pa.) and junior Heather Standring (Spencer, Mass.) assisted on the goals.
Wesleyan closed to within a goal with 7:22 left in the first half on a goal by freshman Jenna Flateman (Barre, Vt.). The Cardinals tied the game at 2-2 with 4:30 left in the game when senior tri-captain Carlin Aloe (Pittsburgh, Pa.) found the net on a pass from sophomore Sonya Behnke (Marblehead, Mass.).
Martin finished with 14 saves for Trinity, while Hutchins Cabibi stopped 11 shots for Wesleyan.
