RODDAY TOSSES TRINITY TO
BASEBALL WIN AT AMHERST
Amherst, Mass. - Sophomore right-hander Chris Rodday (Concord, Mass.) scattered eight hits and a gave up three runs over seven innings with five strikeouts to lead the visiting Trinity College Bantams to a 7-4 win over the Amherst College Lord Jeffs in baseball action this afternoon. Trinity, ranked No. 3 in New England, improves to 14-7 overall, while the Jeffs drop to 13-7 with their first loss in the last five games.
Trinity drew first blood in the opening frame with an unearned run on an RBI single by sophomore Andrew Fries (Dublin, Ohio). Amherst responded in kind when junior Tom Sullivan (Tewksbury, Mass.) plated classmate Brandon Cody (Boston, Mass.) with a two-out single in the bottom half of the inning.
The Bantams blew the game open in the second, as Trinity sophomore Jeff Natale (Hamden, Conn.) victimized Amherst freshman reliever Rob Anderson (Winnetka, Ill.) with a two-run double off the center field wall, driving in classmates Aaron Goldstein (Edina, Minn.) and Billy Wise (Longmeadow, Mass.). Senior co-captain Jayme Dorr (Osterville, Mass.) then drove in a run on a ground out and senior Robert Dolliver (Norwich, Conn.) added an RBI-double down the left field line to give the Bantams a 5-1 cushion they would never relinquish.
Trailing 7-1 in the seventh, Amherst cut the lead to 7-3 when junior Paul Whiting (Mission Viejo, Calif.) raked a two-run homer over the left field wall on a two-strike offering from Rodday. The Jeffs added another run in the ninth off Bantam senior closer Craig Tredenick (Cornwall, Prince Edward Island), thanks to an RBI-double by John Schneider (Grand Rapids, Mich), but Tredenick stranded Schneider at second and struck out the next two batters to close the game.
Trinity pounded out 11 hits, led by Wise, who doubled twice and scored a run. Natale and Dolliver added a pair of hits and two RBI's each. Whiting and Schneider tallied two hits each for the Jeffs.
