TRINITY BASEBALL SWEEPS WESLEYAN

Hartford, Conn. - Junior right-hander Jonah Bayliss (Williamstown, Mass.) allowed three hits and one run with eight strikeouts over six innings to lead the Trinity College Bantams to a 7-3 win in the first game and a sweep of the doubleheader against the visiting Wesleyan University Cardinals in baseball action this afternoon.

Trinity, ranked No. 5 in New England, took the second game, 10-3, to finish the regular season at 23-9 with four straight wins. Trinity and Wesleyan, the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) West Division winner, will both compete in the NESCAC Championship Tournament next weekend at Tufts.
After allowing a Cardinal run thanks to an RBI double by senior co-captain 3B David Bushnell (South Dennis, Mass.) in the top of the first inning, Bayliss retired 14 batters in a row and 16 of the next 17. Trinity senior co-captain SS Andrew Freimuth (Bristol, Conn.) tied the score in the bottom of the first frame with a solo homer, and the Bantams added two more runs in the fifth and three in the sixth. Bantam freshman 2B Jeff Natale (Hamden, Conn.) had RBI singles in the fifth and sixth innings, and classmate Andrew Fries (Dublin, Ohio) provided an run-scoring double in the sixth.

In the second game, Wesleyan scored three runs in the first inning, as sophomore catcher Angus Fredenburg (Concord, N.H.) homered and classmate Justin Vincent (Longmeadow, Mass.) knocked a two-run single. Trinity responded with a run in the first on a walk by Natale, a stolen base, a Cardinal error and a sacrifice fly by junior Rob Dolliver (Norwich, Conn.). The Bantams took back the lead with a five-run second inning, highlighted by two-run singles from Freimuth and Dolliver.
Trinity junior infielder Kurt Piantek (Wallingford, Conn.), who was 4-for-4 in the game with five RBI, smacked a three-run homer in the fourth inning, and plated Dolliver in the fifth to account for the rest of the Trinity runs. Bantam senior righty Mark Mahoney (Newton, Mass.) and freshman right-hander Mark Tremblay (Hooksett, N.H.) combined on a seven-hitter, and held Wesleyan scoreless after the first inning.
