MAHONEY LEADS TRINITY BASEBALL
TO VICTORY IN HOME OPENER
Hartford, Conn.- Senior right-hander Mark Mahoney (Newtown, Mass.) recorded his first career victory on the mound and belted a three-run homer with the bat to lead the Trinity College Bantams to a 12-8 win over the visiting United States Coast Guard Academy Bears in baseball action this afternoon. Trinity, ranked No. 4 in New England, improves to 8-3 in its 2002 home opener, while the Bears drop to 5-8.
Trinity dominated play from the start, taking an 11-0 lead after five innings. Mahoney, who did not walk a batter in six innings, was touched up for his lone run in this sixth. Plagued by injuries that had kept him of the hill for three seasons, Mahoney did not walk a batter en route to his first collegiate triumph. Coast Guard scored seven runs off the Trinity bullpen in the last two innings of the contest.
Bantam senior first basemen Nick Callini (Westfield, Mass.) enjoyed a perfect day at the plate, going 2 for 2 with two walks, while senior co-captain Greg Spanos (Auburn, Mass.) collected two hits and scored three runs.
