TRINITY BASEBALL SWEEPS BRANDEIS
Waltham, Mass. - Junior right-hander Jonah Bayliss (Williamstown, Mass.) went the distance for his sixth win of the year to lead the visiting Trinity College Bantams to a 9-3 win in the first game and a sweep of the doubleheader against the Brandeis University Judges in baseball action this afternoon. Trinity, which took the second game, 4-3, in nine innings, improves to 21-9, while Brandeis, ranked No. 3 in New England and No. 22 in the nation, falls to 19-10 with its first home loss in the last 11 games.
In game one, Trinity broke a 1-1 tie with eight runs in the top of the seventh inning, keyed by a two-RBI single by catcher Andrew Fries (Dublin, Ohio) and a two-RBI double by third baseman Jayme Dorr (Osterville, Mass.). Junior Tom McShane (Manchester, N.H.) struck out eight for Brandeis, but took the loss, dropping his record to 7-3. Bayliss improves to 6-1 on the season.
In game two, Trinity broke another late-inning tie, this time getting two runs in the top of the eighth and then holding off a last-ditch rally by the Judges to win, 4-3. A two-RBI single by senior Tom Osuch (Fairhaven, Mass.) did the damage for Trinity. Brandeis put its first two hitters on in the bottom of the eighth when senior Jim Freethey (Manchester, N.H.) doubled and junior Andrew Kahn (Los Angeles, Calif.) walked. With two outs, junior Jon Brown (Topsfield, Mass.) singled home Freethey and freshman Jeff Krasner (East Greenwich, Conn.) followed with a hit-by-pitch to load the bases, but a line-drive that was caught by Trinity senior co-captain shortstop Andy Freimuth (Bristol, Conn.) ended the threat and the game.
Junior starter Mike Parissi (Leicester, Mass.) went the complete game despite taking the loss. Freshman Mark Tremblay (Hooksett, N.H.) picked up the win for Trinity, and sophomore Austin Kern (West Hartford, Conn.), who entered in the eighth, earned the save.
