BAYLISS TOSSES NO-HITTER TO LEAD TRINITY
BASEBALL TO SPLIT WITH BATES
Hartford, Conn.- Junior right-hander Jonah Bayliss (Williamstown, Mass.) tossed a 14-strikeout, no-hitter in the first game to lead the Trinity College Bantams to a 14-0 win and a split in the doubleheader against the visiting Bates College Bobcats in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) East baseball action this afternoon. Bates won the nightcap, 13-5, in near-freezing weather and snow flurries. Bates is now 4-6-1 overall and 1-4 in the NESCAC, while Trinity moves to 14-4 overall and 5-1 in the NESCAC.
Bayliss' seven-inning, no-hit performance was the first no-hitter recorded by a Bantam since Jonah’s older brother, Jarrett, fired one in 1997. Bayliss was in total command from the start, striking out the side in the first two innings. Senior right fielder Mark Mahoney (Newtown, Mass.) provided the scoring punch for Trinity, belting his third home run of the season.
Salvaging a split, Bates scored six runs in the fifth inning and rode the arm of right-handed reliever Billy Karz (Van Nuys, Calif.) the rest of the way. Karz held Trinity scoreless until the ninth after relieving starter Ryan Weaver (Canton, Ohio) in the bottom of the fifth frame. John Merriman (Clinton, Mass.) led the way for Bates, going 3-for-5 with three runs and a homerun. Junior second basemen Kurt Piantek (Wallingford, Conn.) paced the Bantams offense, going 2-for-5 with his sixth home run of the year.
