AMHERST ELIMINATES TRINITY BASEBALL
FROM NESCAC TOURNEY
Great Pitching Effort by Bayliss Not Enough
Williamstown, Mass.- Senior right-hander Kevin Downes (Pound Ridge, N.Y.) threw four and two-third of scoreless relief to lead the Amherst College Lord Jeffs to a 4-1 win over the Trinity College Bantams in the second round of the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Championship Baseball Tournament at Williams College this afternoon.
Trinity falls to 25-10 and is a long shot to receive an at-large bid to the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament. Amherst improves to 20-13 and will face the loser of the Tufts/Williams game, which was played today at 11 a.m. in Pittsfield, Mass., at 3 p.m. at Williams.
Trinity broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fifth inning on an RBI single by junior Mark Mahoney (Newton, Mass.), but managed only three hits in the game. Amherst took the lead in the top of the sixth inning on a pair of walks by Trinity sophomore right-hander Jonah Bayliss (Williamstown, Mass.) and a two-out single by senior Ryan Whitmarsh (Dalton, Mass.). Whitmarsh’s hit drove in one run, and a second Jeff scored on a Bantam throwing error at third base. Amherst junior Kevin Grant (Mendon, Mass.) singled in Whitmarsh, and the Jeffs added an insurance run in the eighth frame.
Bayliss pitched all nine innings, surrendering one earned run and five hits with 13 strikeouts, but falls to 5-2 on the season. Downes yielded one hit after relieving Lord Jeff starter Dave Krauser (Short Hills, N.J.) in the fifth inning. Mahoney went 2-for-3 for the Bantams.
