TUFTS COMPLETES DOUBLEHEADER AND
SERIES SWEEP OF TRINITY BASEBALL

Hartford, Conn.- Junior right-hander Steve Lapham (Newburyport, Mass.) pitched a seven-hit shutout to lead the visiting Tufts University Jumbos to a 5-0 win in the first game and a sweep of the doubleheader against the Trinity College Bantams in New England Small College Athletic Conference baseball action this afternoon. The Jumbos pounded 18 hits in a 19-2 victory in the second game.

Trinity, ranked No. 1 in the New England Division III Coaches Poll and No. 14 in the nation, drops to 18-4 overall and 5-3 in the NESCAC with three losses in two days to the Jumbos. Tufts, improves to 11-7-1 and 5-0 in the league and has won five consecutive games. The Jumbos had defeated Trinity, 22-0, yesterday to gain a sweep of the three-game series.

Junior Dan Callahan (Medfield, Mass.) tripled home sophomore Jon Herbert (Davidsonville, Mass.) in the top of the first inning to put the Jumbos up 1-0. Lapham only needed the one run, striking out three and walking none.

Trinity had runners on first and third with two outs in the fourth after consecutive singles by sophomores Kurt Piantek (Wallingford, Conn.) and Robert Dolliver (Norwich, Conn.), but Lapham got Trinity junior Mark Mahoney (Newton, Mass.) to fly to right.

Tufts sophomore right-hander went the distance in the nightcap, surrendering five hits, striking out six and walking three. Piantek hit a two-run double in the fourth inning to account for the Bantam runs, but Tufts had already put 11 on the board in its first innings at bat. Tufts played errorless ball over 16 innings in the field.
