BONGIOVANNI LEADS EASTERN
CONNECTICUT PAST TRINITY BASEBALL

Hartford, Conn.- Freshman left-hander Ty Bongiovanni (Meriden, Conn.) allowed four hits and one run with seven strikeouts and one walk to lead the visiting Eastern Connecticut State University Warriors to a 12-2 win over the Trinity College Bantams in baseball action this afternoon.

Trinity, ranked No. 4 in the New England Division III Coaches Poll and No. 14 in the nation, drops to 18-5 overall with its fourth loss in a row. Eastern Connecticut, ranked No. 2 in New England, improves to 21-9.

Eastern scored three runs in the first off Trinity freshman starter Kevin Tidmarsh (Meriden, Conn.) on an RBI-double by senior Nick Tempesta (Brockton, Mass.) and a sacrifice fly by junior Nick Scheets (Milford, Conn.). Trinity got its first run in the bottom of the inning on an RBI-single by sophomore Kurt Piantek (Wallingford, Conn.) that scored junior Greg Spanos (Auburn, Mass.).

After the Warriors tacked on another run in the second, junior John Hedde (Stonington, Conn.) belted his second home run in two games to give Eastern a 6-1 lead. Warrior freshman Joe Serfrass (Newington, Conn.) smacked a two-run home run in the fifth inning, and Eastern added three runs in the sixth and another score in the ninth.

Bongiovanni did not allow a hit after the first inning until a two-out single by Spanos in the eighth. The Bantams broke out with four runs in the ninth frame off Eastern reliever Brian Gouin (Sprague, Conn.), highlighted by a two-run single by Spanos and an RBI double by junior Andrew Freimuth (Bristol, Conn.).
