DORR LATE INNING HEROICS GIVE TRINITY BASEBALL DOUBLEHEADER AND SERIES SWEEP OF COLBY

Norwich, Conn.- Sophomore Jayme Dorr (Osterville, Mass.) drove home the game-winning run in both games to lead the Trinity College Bantams to a 5/5-4/4 doubleheader sweep against the Colby College White Mules in New England Small College Athletic Conference baseball action this afternoon at Dodd Stadium.

Trinity, which has won 10 games in a row and is ranked No. 1 in the New England Division III Coaches Poll, improves to 13-1 overall and 3-0 in the NESCAC with the sweep of the two-day, three-game series, while the White Mules fall to 5-5 and 0-3 in the league.

In the first game, Dorr hit a sacrifice fly to right field with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth inning that scored freshman Tony O'Shaugnessy (Manchester, N.H.) and gave Trinity the 5-4 win. O'Shaughnessy had reached first on an error and advanced on a walk and a another Colby error.

Trinity took a 2-0 lead in the second inning on a two-run single by O'Shaughnessy and went ahead, 3-0, on an RBI-double by junior Andy Freimuth (Bristol, Conn.) in the next frame. Colby pulled within one with two runs in the fourth and took a 4-3 lead in the fifth when senior tri-captain Andrew Tripp (Saco, Maine) scored on an errant throw by Trinity senior co-captain right-hander Jarrett Bayliss (Williamstown, Mass.) on a pick off attempt. The Bantams tied the score in the seventh inning when O'Shaughnessy reached on a Colby error and junior Greg Spanos (Auburn, Mass.) knocked him home on a two-out double to left center.

Bayliss went the distance on the mound for the Bantams, allowing seven hits and striking out 11 to improve to 4-0. Colby pitchers Brandon Royce (Aurora, Ill.) and Jon Lord (Dublin, N.H.) combined to surrender four Trinity hits with Lord taking the loss.

In the second game, which was scheduled for seven innings, Dorr drove home junior Mark Mahoney (Newton, Mass.) with a shot to left center field in the bottom of the eighth. With two outs, Mahoney walked and reached second when Colby sophomore catcher Jeffrey Owen (Whitman, Mass.) thought the pitch hit Mahoney and neglected to get the ball.

Trinity took a 2-0 lead in the second inning on back-to-back RBI-doubles by sophomores Kurt Piantek (Wallingford, Conn.) and Robert Dolliver (Norwich, Conn.). Colby knotted the game at 2-2 in the fourth inning, but the Bantams went back ahead, 4-2, in the fifth on a two-run single by Piantek.

The Mules scored a pair of runs in the seventh inning to tie the score again, but Trinity senior co-captain Jack Richardson (Arlington, Va.) struck out two of the last three batters to squelch the Colby rally. Richardson tossed a five-hitter with nine strikeouts to earn his third win of the season. Colby sophomore reliever Dan Deacon (Rumford, R.I.) took the loss.
