STARTING PITCHING KEYS TRINITY BASEBALL
IN DOUBLEHEADER SWEEP AT BOWDOIN

Brunswick, Maine - Junior second baseman Greg Spanos (Auburn, Mass.) had five hits with scored four runs and set a new College record with his 15th double of the season to lead the Trinity College Bantams to a 6/13-4/6 doubleheader sweep of the Bowdoin College Polar Bears in New England Small College Athletic Conference baseball action this afternoon.

Trinity, ranked No. 4 in New England and No. 14 in the nation, improves to 21-5 and 8-3 in the NESCAC with its sweep of both the day's doubleheader and the two-day, three-game series with its 13-1 triumph yesterday. Bowdoin falls to 11-12 and 3-3 in the league with its fourth straight loss.

Trinity sophomore right-hander Jonah Bayliss (Williamstown, Mass.) shook off early control problems in the first game, and senior co-captain righty Jack Richardson (Arlington, Va.) threw a six-hit, complete game with seven strikeouts in nightcap on the mound.

The Bantams opened the first game with back-to-back doubles by Spanos and fellow junior Andrew Freimuth (Bristol, Conn.) to take a 1-0 lead, but Bowdoin equalized in the bottom of the inning as Bayliss walked four batters to force in the Polar Bear run. The Bantams took a lead they would never lose in the second as Freimuth again delivered an RBI for a 3-1 Trinity edge.

On the mound, Bayliss settled down and pitched four scoreless innings while his team built a 5-1 edge. Bowdoin cut the lead to 5-4 in the sixth as the Polar Bears plated three runs, capped by a two-RBI double by freshman T.J. McLeod (Gorham, Maine). Trinity junior Nick Callini (Westfield, Mass.) delivered an RBI single in the top of the seventh to give Trinity a 6-4 lead, and freshman Kevin Tidmarsh (Meriden, Conn.) came on to pick up the save for the Bantams. Bayliss allowed just three hits on the afternoon while Bowdoin sophomore starter Scott Boruchow (Malvern, Pa.) took the loss.

Four outfield errors that led to seven unearned runs on the afternoon doomed Bowdoin in the nightcap. After Trinity plated an unearned run in the first, the Polar Bears touched up Richardson for three runs as senior Greg Lovely (Milton, Mass.) knocked in a pair with a two-run single to right. Two more unearned runs in second for Trinity tied the game at 3-3. The Bantams scored five earned runs before a costly Polar Bear outfield gaffe allowed four more to cross the plate as Trinity took a commanding 12-3 lead in the fifth frame.
