TRINITY BASEBALL SWEEPS AT WESLEYAN
Middletown, CT- Sophomore shortstop Andrew Freimuth (Bristol, CT) homered
and doubled in the first game to lead the visiting Trinity College Bantams
to an 8-4 win and a sweep of the doubleheader over the Wesleyan University
Cardinals in New England Small College Athletic Conference baseball action
this afternoon.
Trinity, which is ranked No. 5 in the NCAA Division III New England
Coaches' Poll and No. 16 in the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Division III
national poll, improves to 13-4 with five straight victories. Wesleyan falls
to 11-7.
Freimuth drove in three runs on the homer and added a fourth while
junior righthander Jarrett Bayliss (Williamstown, MA) scattered seven hits
and struck out 10 for the win. Wesleyan senior infielder Mike Volpe (Garden
City, NY) was 2 for 4 with two RBI.
In the second game, Trinity scored on an unearned run in the top of
the seventh inning to post a 13-12 triumph. After jumping out to an early
7-0 lead, the Bantams committed five errors in the bottom of a nine-run
fourth inning for the Cardinals. Junior outfielder Windsor Schmidt
(Veradale, WA) knocked a three-run homer in the inning for Wesleyan.
Trinity rallied for five more runs in the top of the fifth inning
only to finds themselves in 12-12 tie after Wesleyan scored three runs in
the sixth frame. Trinity freshman righthander and younger brother of the
first game's winner Jonah Bayliss (Williamstown, MA) picked up the win in
relief.
