Sports update, baseball vs. Suffolk at Portland, ME (NCAA First Round) 5/19/00


BRODEUR POWERS TRINITY BASEBALL OVER SUFFOLK IN NCAA OPENER

Portland, Maine- Senior outfielder Todd Brodeur (Auburn, MA) had a double, a
triple, and five RBI to lead the Trinity College Bantams to a 21-4 win over
the Suffolk University Rams in the opening round of the NCAA Division III
New England Regional Baseball Championship Tournament at Hadlock Stadium.
	The Bantams, seeded No. 5 in the six-team tourney field, improve to
22-7 with the win.  Suffolk, seeded No. 2, falls to 36-8 with its first loss
in the last 15 games.  Trinity will play the winner of No. 3 Wheaton College
(28-10) vs. No. 4 Southern Maine (31-12), which will be played tonight at 7
p.m., tomorrow at 7 p.m.
	Brodeur hit a three-run triple in the top of the sixth inning to
give Trinity a 6-1 lead and doubled home two more runs in the seventh, as
Trinity broke the game open with seven runs in both the seventh and eighth
innings.  
	The Bantams scored one run in the second inning when senior third
baseman Jayson Barbarotta (Trumbull, CT) scored on a balk by Suffolk, and
added two more in the third on a two-run double by sophomore DH Alan
Andreini (Greenwich, CT).
	Suffolk got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning on a
lead-off, solo homer by junior outfielder Mike Anastasia (South Boston, MA),
and the game remained at 3-1 until Trinity scored four runs in the sixth.
The Rams scored three more runs in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI single
by sophomore catcher Adam Pellerin (Norton, MA) and a two-run sungle by
senior third baseman Nick Melchionna (Revere, MA).  Trinity relievers Paul
Gemelli (Hanover, MA) and Justin Olewnik (Pittsfield, MA) got a strikeout
and a double play to end the inning.
	In the top of the seventh, Trinity senior catcher Jake Miles
(Lewistown, IL) tripled in two runs, while Brodeur and sophomore outfielder
Steve Cella (Peabody, MA) had two-run doubles in a seven-run inning.
Trinity scored seven more runs in the eighth, and Bantam senior right-hander
Pat Sheehy (Orange, CT) pitched scoreless eighth and ninth innings for a
21-4 final.
