Sports update, baseball vs. Southern Maine at Portland, ME (NCAA Second Round) 5/20/00


SOUTHERN MAINE HANDS TRINITY FIRST LOSS IN NCAA BASEBALL TOURNEY

Portland, Maine- Junior right-hander Mark Russell (Arlington, MA) allowed
one run and five hits over 6.1 innings and freshman outfielder Tyler Delorme
(Enosburg Falls, NH) went 3-for-4 with an RBI to lead the University of
Southern Maine Huskies to a 12-5 win over the Trinity College Bantams in the
second round of the NCAA Division III New England Regional Baseball
Championship Tournament at Hadlock Stadium.
	The Huskies, seeded No. 3 in the six-team, double-elimination
tourney field, improve to 33-12 with the win.  Trinity, seeded No. 5, falls
to 22-8.  Trinity will play No. 2 Suffolk University (37-8) tomorrow at 3:30
p.m.  The Huskies will play No. 1 Bridgewater State (29-7) at noon tomorrow.
The loser of the Southern Maine/Bridgewater game will play the winner of the
Trinity/Suffolk game at 7 p.m. tomorrow.  Trinity beat Suffolk, 21-4,
yesterday in the first round.
	Southern Maine jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the top of the first
inning off Trinity starter Brendan Moss (Orange, CT).  Moss walked junior
outfielder Shaun Richardson (Kennebunk, ME) to lead off the game and junior
shortstop Pat Toomey (Medford, MA) doubled to left.  After a tag out at
home, Delorme singled home Toomey.  The Huskies went on to score five more
runs on a hit-by-pitch, a sacrifice fly, an RBI single by sophomore first
baseman Andy Sebring (Worcester, MA), and a two-RBI single by sophomore
catcher Peter L'Italien (Salem, MA).
	Trinity, which didn't get its first hit of Russell until the bottom
of the fourth inning, scored its first run in the sixth when sophomore
outfielder Steven Cella (Peabody, MA) doubled and scored on a sacrifice fly
by sophomore shortstop Andrew Freimuth (Bristol, CT).  
	The Huskies built the lead back up to six runs in the top of the
seventh ona  sacrifice fly by Sebring, but Trinity rallied to score two runs
in the bottom of the inning.  Senior first baseman Brian Powell (Holyoke,
MA) led off the inning with a homer to right field and senior outfielder
Todd Brodeur (Auburn, MA) doubled and scored on an RBI single by Cella.
	The Bantams cut the lead to 7-5 in the eight inning on a two-run
double by senior third baseman Jayson Barbarotta (Trumbull, CT), but the
Huskies answered with five runs in the top of the ninth.  Freshman Darrin
Daniels (Millinocket, ME) had a bases-loaded, three-RBI double in the inning
for Southern Maine.
