Sports update, baseball vs. Amherst (2), 4/1/00

TRINITY BASEBALL SPILTS WITH AMHERST 

Hartford, Conn. -   Senior first baseman Brian Powell (Holyoke, MA) drove
home sophomore shortstop Andrew Freimuth (Bristol, CT) on a single to break
a 6-6 tie in the sixth inning of game 2 and help the Trinity College Bantams
to a split against the Amherst College Lord Jeffs in a New England Small
College Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader this afternoon. 
	In the second game, Trinity was came back from an early deficit and
won, 9-6.  Amherst sophomore third baseman Ryan Whitmarsh (Dalton, MA) hit
his second homerun of the day in the first inning to give Amherst a 3-0
advantage.  Trinity quickly answered in its half of the first with four
runs.  Powell, senior co-captain rightfielder Jim Klocek (Grafton, MA), and
freshman designated hitter Robert Dolliver (Norwich, CT) all had RBI singles
in the inning.  
	After Powell home Freimuth in the fourth, Freimuth provided Trinity
some breathing room when he connected for a two-run homer in the sixth.
Trinity senior righthander Brendan Moss (Orange, CT) went the distance,
allowing nine hits.  
 	In the first game, Trinity had no answer for the pitching mastery of
Amherst junior righthander Kevin Downes (Pound Ridge, NY), who pitched a
one-hit shutout.  The Jeffs got seven of their eight runs in the second
inning as Whitmarsh started the scoring with a two-run homer.  Junior
outfielder Dave Siegle (Falmouth, ME) quickly followed with a RBI single.
Senior third baseman Jayson Barbarotta (Trumbull, CT) had Trinity's lone hit
in the game.
